As we have seen on the map with average temperatures in different regions of Spain in January, there are a great variety of climates on the Iberian Peninsula. While on the Costa del Sol in January it’s an agreeable 15-20ºC during the day, there are other regions where one can enjoy the snow in Spain in Winter.
White Spain in Winter:
Snowfall is most intense in Spain on the higher regions of the central and northern Meseta, which has a relatively harsh continental climate. This is the case for the provinces of Segovia, Burgos, Soria y Leon, but does not reach the north coast, where the climate is much softer and the vegetation subtropical.
Here you can see a village of the Cordillera Cantábrica covered in snow, a picture that one can find in the news in Spain every Winter:
But where the snowfall is more welcome is in the mountains, where it allows people to practice winter sports. The best known ski slopes are in the Pyrenees, which separate Spain from France, and in the Sierra Nevada, which has white snowy peaks all winter despite being only an hour by car from the Mediterranean beaches. But there are many other ski resorts in Spain: in the Picos de Europa, in the Cordillera Cantábrica and in the Sistema Central, close to Madrid, one can also go skiing, hike on snow rackets, etc.
